Kate Rochford was born January 9th 1874 in Chickasaw County, Iowa the oldest of four daughters. After graduating from Northern Indiana Normal School in 1895, she studied law with her uncle Joe Kirby of Sioux Falls. On October 5th 1897 she passed “a very rigid examination” at Pierre and received her Certification. The press mistakenly heralded the occasion as a first proclaiming “South Dakota’s First Women Lawyer”. Soon after the turn of the century Kate moved to Oklahoma City; census records identified her as a lawyer, an internal revenue worker, and a stenographer. She died February 10th 1939.[1]
